Sexual violence is a crime against a person's mind, body, and spirit and can be devastating for the victim as well as for those close to them. While victims of sexual violence will be affected differently by the crisis, each will find their own path to recovery. There are, however, certain reactions that have been recognized to be very common. They include:

  • Sleep Disturbances
  • Eating Pattern Disturbances
  • Flashbacks
  • Fears and Phobias
  • Guilt
  • Anger
  • Loss of Trust
  • Sexual Issues and Difficulties with Realtionships
  • Substance Abuse
  • Suicidal Thoughts and/or Attempts

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the above reactions as a result of sexual violence that has occurred, either recently or in the past, call your local sexual assault center support line for support. Advocates are available to listen and help you as well as provide referrals to other services if needed.
